  1. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) understands resident concerns about the prospect of having the power disconnected to the park. Our primary interest is to ensure electrical hazards communicated to the owners on January 19, 2010 are rectified. ESA copies tenants on communications of this nature to notify them of electrical hazards, and the potential for disconnection of electrical service if these hazards are not addressed. ESA is taking every action possible to work collaboratively with the owners in order to resolve this situation, and considers the disconnection of electrical service is the last option. We take this step very seriously, and only order disconnection where electrical hazards could result in harm to residents.

The January 19, 2010 notice to the owner required them to obtain the services of an ECRA/ESA licensed electrical contractor to remedy documented electrical defects by February 12, 2010. Electrical service will not be disconnected on that date. ESA will conduct a final follow-up on February 16, 2010 to identify what steps have been taken by the owners to initiate the correction of deficiencies. If no progress is made by that date, ESA will have no choice but to issue a formal notice to the owner that the electrical service to the park will be disconnected in order to remove the hazards and safeguard the well being of the residents. This notice will clearly identify the actual date of electrical service disconnection to 1010 Dundas Street East. ESA will work to notify residents of any disconnection date as early as possible to support them in making alternative living arrangements. ESA has been providing regular updates to the Region of Durham and the Town of Whitby on this situation.
